Google: Core Android System Is Safe In This Apple War

After Apple has smacked Samsung – the biggest Android smartphone manufacturer on the face of the Earth – with a $1.05-billion win in court recently, Google has fired off a statement assuring Android fans that the core of the mobile operating system is safely out of reach of the current legal war waged between the South Korean conglomerate and the Cupertino, California-based iDevices-maker.  Image may be NSFW.

Google had to make a statement to this effect, you see, as Apple and Samsung’s legal war in courts the world over involve the search giant as the devices Apple claims infringe on its intellectual property are all Android Samsung devices. To the initiated, Apple’s complaints are not directly targeted at Android. Their design patents cover the look and feel of the iPhone and iPad, something they say were directly and willfully copied by Samsung. Apple’s utility patents cover features that are add-ons by Samsung with their TouchWiz skin of Android. These features include the arrangement and appearance of icons, the “bounce back” effect, and more. Nonetheless, Google had to issue the following statement just in case people are getting the wrong idea that Android is now not safe from the offensive of Apple: “The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system and several are being re-examined by the U.S. Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players–including newcomers–are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don’t want anything to limit that.”  Image may be NSFW.

So what’s our take-away from this? Google wants you to know that Samsung will appeal the hell out of this case.  In fact, there is a distinct possibility that this case in the US will reach and be taken by the Supreme Court as the underlining complaint here forwarded by laymen, tech observers and even some in the US legal system is that the US patent system is broken. The statement also indirectly jabs at Apple for stopping people from “building upon ideas that have been around for decades.” Google also wants you to know that the U.S. Patents Office is now looking at Apple patents. Furthermore, Google wants you to know that if it comes to it, Google will put all the weight of the giant of a technology company that it is behind its Android partners. This is far from over. This is just beginning.  Image may be NSFW.
